Our Guide To Andover

About Andover

The historic market town of Andover dates back to Saxon times, and there is still a street market every Thursday and Saturday. Most of the buildings are from the 18th century when Andover was an important stopover destination for stagecoaches travelling between London and Exeter. The town is set in a convenient location, with Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton and London all within easy reach by road and rail.

Andover has a number of links to the RAF, having been home to RAF Andover during the First World War and later the first British military helicopter unit. Although the airfield is no longer in use, the town has retained its military links through the Museum of Army Flying. Today, Andover is taking on a new role as a business hub, as the site of RAF Andover has been redeveloped as Andover Business Park.

There are also a number of things to do in and around Andover, as outlined below.

The Hawk Conservancy Trust

The Hawk Conservancy Trust was founded in 2002, but it was originally a working farm, owned by Reg and Hilary Smith. Over the years, the farm morphed into a zoo before specialising in birds of prey in the early 1980s to become the Hawk Conservancy. The Trust has since provided birds for TV and film work and is involved in a number of breeding and conservation programmes. Today, the Trust is involved in a number of projects, such as the reintroduction of the Red Kite and the International Vulture Programme.

The Hawk Conservancy offers an exciting day out for adults and children alike, with spectacular displays and educational talks on offer daily. Watch the Secretary Bird demonstrate its powerful kick as it ‘hunts’ a rubber snake, or head to Reg’s Wildflower Meadow to watch vultures, peregrine falcons and bald eagles swoop and soar across the landscape. Visitors can also take a peek at the National Bird of Prey Hospital, which treats more than 200 brids of prey each year.

With all the excitement, visitors are sure to get hungry. The Feathers Restaurant is purpose-built and fully accessible and offers a broad selection of drinks, snacks and meals. Better still, the menu promotes local producers so visitors will be supporting local businesses as well as wildlife conservation.

Cottonworth Vineyards

Cottonworth is just 4 miles outside Andover and home to the Liddell family, who have been farming there for four generations using traditional methods to produce high quality sparkling wine of the Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier varieties. The south-facing slopes, temperate climate and chalky soil provide excellent conditions for growing quality grapes and the rows of grape vines provide a beautiful backdrop.

Cottonworth offer vineyard tours and wine tasting from early June until late October, priced at £55 for two people. The guided tour of the vineyard is followed by wine tasting and a Winemaker’s Lunch, making it a romantic afternoon for couples. You are sure to discover a wine you love, and when you do you can purchase a bottle from the vineyard shop, situated in a delightful converted barn.

Andover Riding School

Andover Riding School offers riding lessons to people of all ability levels, from total beginners to advanced riders. The riding school is a small establishment, offering both one-to-one and group lessons in a purpose-built school.

The lessons are very reasonably priced, starting at £25 for a half-hour private lesson – the option generally recommended to beginner riders. For children under 5, the school offers half-hour lead rein rides for £17. These fun lessons are great for confidence giving as the child will get used to sitting on the pony, ready to learn to ride as they grow older.

Andover Riding School also offers Pony Days, where children can ‘own’ one of the school’s ponies for the day. The day includes a riding lesson as well as stable management lessons where the children are taught how to groom, tack up, muck out and much more. For parents looking for something to occupy their pony-mad children, this is something sure to keep them busy!
